Former Managing Attorney Shares Wisdom After a Decade of Innocence Work

After 10 years of outstanding leadership as the Innocence Project’s managing attorney, David Loftis left the Innocence Project in April 2016 with a rich experience of wrongful conviction work to be the Attorney-in-Charge of Post-Conviction and Forensic Litigation for the Legal Aid Society.
A Brooklyn, New York, native, Loftis said he was all too familiar with the unfair power dynamic between police and citizens. This became a motivating factor in his career path to represent poor people and people of color as a public defender, including staff attorney roles with the Bronx Defenders, Neighborhood Defender Service of Harlem and Federal Defenders.
“Seeing the folks once they get out, and seeing that you had a small part of it — that’s wonderful,” he said.
