Investigation Reveals Four Chicago Men Are “Likely Innocent”

An investigation commissioned by Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel into cases involving former police detective Reynaldo Guevara revealed that at least four men were likely wrongly convicted due to the detective’s misconduct, according to BuzzFeed News. The investigation is currently under a court-ordered seal.
Roberto Almodovar, 40, is serving a life sentence for a 1994 double murder. No physical evidence links him to the crime scene and the only witness testified under “undisputedly challenging circumstances,” according to BuzzFeed. Jose Montanez, 48, and Armando Serrano, 43, are each serving 45 years for a 1993 murder based solely on the testimony of an incentivized informant. Robert Bouto, 39, is also serving 45 years for a different murder based on the testimony of the same informant. The informant has since admitted to fabricating the confessions in exchange for a reduced sentence in his own armed robbery case.
Despite these findings, Cook County Prosecutor Anita Alvarez says she will not reopen the cases, according to the article. Jennifer Bonjean, an attorney for the three men, has filed a motion asking the courts to unseal the reports.
“Any effort to further conceal them amounts to nothing short of a conspiracy to subvert justice and truth,” Bonjean told BuzzFeed News.
