Wisconsin Man Exonerated

Wisconsin Innocence Project

client Joseph Frey was released this morning after 20 years in prison. Frey was wrongfully convicted of sexually assaulting a college student at knifepoint in 1991.

New DNA test results linked another man to the crime. The real perpetrator has also been connected to two subsequent rapes, which might have been prevented if police had not initially pursued Frey. The Oshkosh Northwestern quotes Frey’s attorney, Keith Findley:

“It’s gratifying to see the truth emerge and the proper conclusion be reached in the end,” Findley said.

A Winnebago County Circuit Court judge overturned Frey’s conviction in May, and prosecutors have now declined to retry the case.
