recently took a closer look at the toll the justice system can have on the wrongfully convicted as they work to rebuild their lives waiting for compensation. The episode features interviews with Innocence Project clients and New York exonerees
Jeffrey Deskovic
and
Alan Newton
among others and chronicles the reality of navigating the world with limited financial and social support.
According to
NewsHour
, the exonerees interviewed said that regardless of compensation, they would pay anything to have the years they lost in prison back.
About one-third of the people exonerated after proving their innocence have not been compensated for the injustice they suffered and the time they spent incarcerated. To date, there have been a total of 231 DNA exonerees that have been awarded some kind of compensation.
