Washington Institutes Moratorium on Death Penalty

On Tuesday, Washington Governor Jay Inslee announced that he was implementing a moratorium on the death penalty. The Associated Press reported that Inlsee reached his decision after months of review and of talking with family members of victims, prosecutors and law enforcement.

The Associate Press reports that Inslee said at a press conference: “There have been too many doubts raised about capital punishment, there are too many flaws in this system today. . . . There is too much at stake to accept an imperfect system.”

The governor will issue a reprieve to all death penalty cases that come across his desk, without the intention of commuting sentences or pardoning those sentenced to death. Under his governorship, the nine men awaiting execution at the Washington State Penitentiary will be saved from execution.
