Two Brothers Among the Recently Exonerated Illinois Men

Last week, an Illinois judge tossed out the convictions of two Illinois brothers and another man after DNA tests proved their innocence of a 1991 rape and murder and implicated another man in the crime. Brothers James Harden and Jonathan Barr were exonerated with Robert Taylor on Thursday but only Taylor was released from the Menard Correction Center in Chester, Illinois that day. Harden’s release came on Friday and Barr is expected to be freed soon.
Having been convicted as teenagers, all three men must now adjust to freedom after nearly 20 years behind bars.
James Harden is represented by the University of Chicago Law School Exoneration Project. Jonathan Barr is represented by the Innocence Project, which is affiliated with Cardozo School of Law, and Robert Taylor is represented by the Center on Wrongful Convictions of Youth and private attorney Jennifer Blagg.
