The
National Registry of Exonerations
, which provides detailed information about every known exoneration in the United States since 1989, is in the process of conducting the first systematic study of recantations and recently released preliminary findings.
The research examined all of the cases in the Registry’s database that involve post conviction recantations by witnesses or victims. Of 1,068 exonerations in the data set, 250 (23%) involved recantations, and most recantations occurred in murder and child sex abuse exonerations.
The Registry expects to release a complete report early next year.

Why has there been so little study done on this extremely critical information? A recantation has the weight of DNA evidence. “#BelieveWomen” I also would like to know the “exact number of people who have been accused.” Why is that information not being provided?
