PBS Frontline Gets Emmy Nod for “The Confessions”

Two months after the Innocence Network honored filmmakers Ofra Bikel and Ted Gesing for their documentary “The Confessions,” which appeared on PBS’s Frontline, the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences followed suit and nominated the episode for an Emmy award.

In “The Confessions,” which tells the story of four U.S. Navy sailors who were wrongfully convicted of rape in Norfolk, Virginia, Bikel and Gesing took on the difficult issue of false confessions and explored the factors that cause innocent people to confess to crimes they didn’t commit.

Bikel has spent much of her long and productive career as a documentarian giving voice to the wrongfully convicted, with her work often helping to free the innocent. Gesing is a producer and director of non-fiction media and has worked with Bikel for four years.

The Innocence Network is an affiliation of organizations dedicated to providing pro bono legal and investigative services to individuals seeking to prove innocence of crimes for which they have been convicted and working to redress the causes of wrongful convictions.
