Michael Morton Celebrates One Year of Freedom

Thursday marked the first anniversary of Michael Morton’s release after 25 years of wrongful imprisonment. Morton, who was wrongfully convicted of murdering his wife, has worked to become a criminal justice reform advocate over the year, and is working to implement new laws that hold prosecutors accountable for misconduct. The

Texas Tribune

reports:


“I’m really blessed that I can do what I want to do now,” Morton said. “I’ve been plopped into a situation where I can actually contribute to seeing to it that what happened to me doesn’t happen to someone else.”

Yesterday at the state Capitol, Morton met with lawmakers and spoke about what went wrong in his case. He is also launching a new website where people can contact lawmakers to urge them to support laws that hold prosecutors accountable for their errors.
