National Registry of Exonerations Reports Wrongful Conviction Data

According to a new report by the National Registry of Exonerations, the United States saw a record breaking 87 people exonerated last year across 25 states. The study, which was released today, revealed that DNA was a factor in 18 of the exonerations.
Launched in 2012 as a joint project of the University of Michigan Law School and the Northwestern University School of Law, the registry is the most comprehensive accounting of exonerations ever compiled. This is its third report on collected data.
The
New York Times
reported that the registry now lists 1,300 exonerations dating back to 1989, most of which stem from wrongful convictions for murder, rape or other sexual assaults.
