Herman Wallace
, who lived in solitary confinement for more than 40 years in prison in Louisiana, lost his battle to liver cancer today, just three days after a federal judge ordered his immediate release. Wallace was held in solitary confinement longer than any other prisoner in U.S. history.
Wallace, who became known as one of the “Angola 3,” was convicted of the 1972 murder of a prison guard. His conviction was overturned on Tuesday and he was freed from prison because the grand jury that had convicted him was improperly chosen, violating the Fourteenth Amendment.
Wallace’s attorney George Kendall told NBC News, “ ‘He was very comfortable and surrounded by loved ones … He was grateful that he was alive on free soil.’ ”
Wallace would have been 72 in only nine days.
