Hearing to dismiss Kennedy Brewer’s case based on evidence that he is innocent; if Brewer’s case is dismissed tomorrow, he will be the first person in Mississippi exonerated through post-conviction DNA testing. The Innocence Project also expects Levon Brooks’ case to be heard tomorrow (immediately after Brewer’s). Based on evidence that Brooks is innocent, the Innocence Project seeks to throw out his conviction. Late last week, the Mississippi Supreme Court granted an order expediting his case, clearing the path for it to be heard tomorrow.
Friday, February 15, 2008; 10:30 a.m.
Circuit Court in Noxubee County; 505 South Jefferson St. in Macon, Mississippi. The hearing is in front of Judge Lee J. Howard.
Attorneys representing Brewer and Brooks (including Peter Neufeld and Vanessa Potkin of the Innocence Project) will appear in court. The families of both Brewer and Brooks will attend. Brewer will speak to reporters after the hearing. If Brooks’ motion is granted and he is released from custody, he will also speak to reporters after the hearing.
