More than a year after the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Conviction Integrity Unit announced that it would reopen dozens of murder cases that resulted in guilty verdicts that were investigated by Louis Scarcella, a detective who handled some of Brooklyn’s most notorious crimes in the 1980s and 1990s, Brooklyn prosecutors have added 14 additional cases to the docket.
The review, which was ordered by former District Attorney Charles Hynes has already reversed several convictions and agreed to settlements with the wrongly convicted — which the Innocence Blog wrote about

Current District Attorney Kenneth Thompson spoke to the
New York Daily News
Editorial Board about the investigation’s increased case load which resulted from database searches using different spellings of the detective’s name and cross checking cases handled by his partner.
“I think it shows the level of commitment with this Conviction Review Unit,” the DA said, according to the

Scarcella has denied any wrongdoing.
