Bill Would Increase Compensation for Wisconsin’s Wrongfully Convicted

Wisconsin legislators have proposed increasing payouts for the wrongfully convicted. The state’s current package provides $5000 per year of wrongful imprisonment with a lifetime limit of $25,000 and is one of the lowest in the nation. The proposed reforms would raise the amount that the exonerated can receive to the federal standard of $50,000 per year of wrongful imprisonment.

Wisconsin Innocence Project Executive Director Keith Findley issued a joint statement on Monday announcing the bill with several Wisconsin lawmakers.
