Arson Experts Say Texas Fire Investigation Was Faulty

A Texas forensic oversight panel heard from national arson experts today in a long-awaited hearing on the evidence used to convict Cameron Todd Willingham of arson for a 1991 fire that killed his three daughters. Willingham was executed in 2004 despite strong evidence that the fire was accidental.

Arson expert Craig Beyler antestified before the Texas Forensic Science Commission at an Austin meeting that we streamed live here on our website.

The Dallas Morning News reports:

Beyler told the panel that he reviewed the overall methodology of the fire investigators and found their investigation did not prove arson was the only possible cause of the house fire. He admitted that while the way fire investigations are conducted today differs from 1991, eliminating all natural causes of fire before determining arson is a fairly timeless notion.
