Peter L. Markowitz is a Professor of Law at Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law, where he founded and currently directs the Kathryn O. Greenberg Immigration Justice Clinic. He is an expert on the intersection of criminal and immigration law and, along with his clinic, has been responsible for numerous advancements in the field, including: designing the nation’s first immigration public defender system, developing the legal foundations underlying modern sanctuary laws, and initiating the nation’s first holistic immigration unit located in a public defender office. Prior to entering academia, Professor Markowitz clerked for the Honorable Frederic Block of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York and founded the immigration project at The Bronx Defenders.He and his clinic have received several awards, including the Daniel Levy Award for outstanding and innovative advocacy in the field of immigration.
