Stop the Execution of Walter Barton

Walter “Arkie” Barton is scheduled to be executed in Missouri on May 19, 2020, despite strong evidence of his innocence. Barton was convicted of a 1991 murder based on unreliable evidence; he has always maintained his innocence. On Monday afternoon, Missouri Governor Parson denied Barton clemency and Barton’s legal team filed an appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court.

On Friday, a judge granted a 30-day stay of his execution, but that decision was overturned when the US Court of Appeals for the 8th Circuit vacated the stay on Sunday. He will be the first person executed in the US amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.
