Late Tuesday night a wrongful conviction bill was filed in the New York Legislature that would be a huge step towards protecting against wrongful convictions in the state. The bill would reduce false confessions by requiring that interrogations in serious felonies be recorded in full. While there are still some details to be worked out, it would also make major improvements in the way that police identification procedures are administered, thereby reducing eyewitness misidentification, the leading contributing cause of wrongful convictions proven by DNA.
The bill’s passage is by no means guaranteed. The legislative session is scheduled to end on Friday, June 21.
